| page 1 of 2 | CMS ELIMATES 90 DAY GRACE PERIOD!
Medicare traditionally has allowed a 90-day grace period after the annual implementation of the CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM code sets. This grace period gave providers and suppliers time to become familiar with the new codes and learn about the discontinued codes.
Beginning this year, there is no more grace period. The new HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule requires providers to use national medical code sets that are valid at the time that a service is provided. Therefore CMS can no longer allow a 90-day grace period for providers and suppliers to learn about the new, modified and discontinued codes.
ICD-9-CM code revisions become effective October 1st each year while CPT and HCPCS code revisions become effective January 1st.
